Kamloops’ Hicks backstops Denver to NCAA Title; named Most Outstanding Player
LAS VEGAS — The Denver Pioneers are NCAA Men’s Hockey Champions for the third time in five seasons as they defeated the Wisconsin Badgers 2–1 in Saturday’s (April 11) final.
Denver was backstopped by Kamloops product Johnny Hicks, who made 29 saves in the victory. The 20-year-old netminder stopped 78 of 82 shots over two games – including a 49 save effort in double overtime Thursday – and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
“I’m so happy that we could get it done with this group,” Hicks said in a statement via the Pioneers, who won their NCAA-leading 11th title. “We’ve gone through so much adversity, and I’m just so proud of this group.”
