LAS VEGAS — The Denver Pioneers are NCAA Men’s Hockey Champions for the third time in five seasons as they defeated the Wisconsin Badgers 21 in Saturday’s (April 11) final.

Denver was backstopped by Kamloops product Johnny Hicks, who made 29 saves in the victory. The 20-year-old netminder stopped 78 of 82 shots over two games – including a 49 save effort in double overtime Thursday – and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

“I’m so happy that we could get it done with this group,” Hicks said in a statement via the Pioneers, who won their NCAA-leading 11th title. “We’ve gone through so much adversity, and I’m just so proud of this group.”

“I was just playing off instinct.”

Hicks was also named to the all-tournament team, and went unbeaten in regulation in his NCAA freshman season with a 16-0-1 record. He played finished with a 1.19 goals against average and .957 save percentage in 21 games this season.

The five-foot-ten netminder played for the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials and Brooks Bandits as well as the WHL’s Victoria Royals before joining Denver this year.

Kamloops’ Brady Milburn also dressed for Saturday’s final. Also in his freshmen season, the forward – who spent four seasons with the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs – posted one goal and six points in 40 NCAA games.

Denver’s winning goal also had a Kamloops connection, as it was scored by Kyle Chyzowski, nephew of former Blazer Dave Chyzowski.
