KAMLOOPS — Mother Nature may not allow it to be true in the literal sense, but Saturday (Feb. 28) is the coldest night of the year, with the fundraising event taking place across the country in more than 200 locations.

Locally, the Mustard Seed in Kamloops is helping to organize the Coldest Night of the Year walk for Saturday evening. The Mustard Seed has a goal of raising $25,000 and is already more than half way there.

“Last year, our goal was $20,000 and actually after the event we reached $23,000,” said Katie Hutchins, community and volunteer engagement manager at the Mustard Seed. “We thought this year, why not try to push it a little bit and try to just get that $25,000? I think it’s looking good. A lot of donations have come in today, even from when I checked this morning to when I checked right before, so a lot of people getting their last minute donations in. I think we will be able to reach that goal.”

All the funds raised in Kamloops will stay in Kamloops with the Mustard Seed utilizing the money throughout the organization. Currently, 87 walkers are registered as part of 14 teams.

“It doesn’t take much to get involved. You don’t even have to come to the event – you can donate to anybody’s profile when you go on the website, you can share it with friends, those things make a big difference,” said Hutchins. “And it might seem like a pretty low-key event, just coming and walking with your friends and family but it does a lot more than you think and just coming together as a community makes a big difference.”
