Environmental group calls on Kamloops council to give FortisBC rate change proposal the thumbs down

KAMLOOPS — A community environmental group is urging Kamloops council not to back FortisBC’s move to change its rate scheme. The utility company proposes to offer new homes in B.C. biomethane service, which it calls ‘100 per cent renewable.’

FortisBC’s application is currently before the B.C. Utilities Commission. Letters of comment are due by October 12.

A FortisBC delegation will appear before Kamloops council at Tuesday’s (Sept. 26) regular meeting, requesting council send such a letter.

Citizens for Climate Action, described in a news release as local volunteers affiliated with Transition Kamloops, is calling FortisBC’s proposal ‘little more than greenwashing.’

“Fortis’ proposal amounts to a new subsidy for fossil gas customers, at a time when we need to be encouraging electrification and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels,” said Citizens for Climate Action spokesperson Joanne Hammond in the release. “Expanding the residential network now will result in a net increase in fossil gas use and make our region even more vulnerable to the kinds of climate disasters we have seen in the past few years.”

Rather than supporting FortisBC’s plan, the community group is calling on Kamloops mayor and council to “learn about and implement long-term local climate solutions that prioritize the health of people and communities.”
