FLOOD WATCH

City of Kamloops keeping a close eye on North and South Thompson Rivers

KAMLOOPS — On Sunday, the BC River Forecast Centre placed a flood watch on both the North and South Thompson Rivers.

Both rivers saw fairly significant rises as a result of precipitation over the weekend. City officials have been keeping a close eye on the rivers within the city limits, and despite seeing a rise of almost 30 centimetres over the weekend, they aren’t concerned either the North or South Thompson will breach its banks.

“We did have that significant precipitation over the North and the South Thompson basins. However, with that came cooler temperatures, so the snow melt slowed down,” Peter Nordgren, Utility Services Supervisor with the City of Kamloops explains. “As of right now, we are ready to take any action items, as far as our flood response plan goes. But at this point, we don’t see any forecast that indicates we’ll have to take further action.”

While crews remain on alert throughout the city, there is enough capacity remaining in the rivers, and city staff don’t see any rain events in the forecast that would suggest they’ll need to implement any emergency measures.

“We have a flood response plan in place,” Nordgren says. “We are not reaching any levels of concern at this point and the forecast is not showing that. However, we are ready to take any action should that change. That’s anything from covering catch basins to removing the railing at the pier down at Riverside Park. There’s any number of steps we could take.”

As always, Nordgren urges residents to exercise caution if they find themselves near the North or South Thompson Rivers, as both streams are running high and moving very quickly.
