North Thompson River and South Thompson River placed under Flood Watch

KAMLOOPS — The North Thompson and South Thompson rivers have been placed under a flood watch by the BC River Forecast Centre. In addition, the Thompson (downstream from Kamloops) and the Nicola rivers are under high streamflow advisories. The changes were issued Sunday (May 21) by the provincial office.

The concern is based on the Environment Canada weather forecast which is predicting rain showers to sweep across much of the southern Interior over the next few days. The forecast is calling for light rain to begin Monday before becoming heavier on Tuesday. Rainfall totals could range from 20-40 mm, with higher amounts expected on east-facing mountain slopes.

It also warns of an increased risk of flooding in Cache Creek. The River Forecast Centre says the headwaters of the Bonaparte River are at risk for the upcoming precipitation. Because of the situation, the Bonaparte remains under Flood Watch.

During this uncertain time, officials are reminding the public that being near riverbanks, creeks and fast-flowing bodies of water is dangerous because of unstable riverbanks that may fall into the water without warning. High streamflows can also easily trap strong swimmers and increase the risk of drowning.
