‘A new way forward’; Kamloops MLA anticipates party renewal as the B.C. United era begins

KAMLOOPS — Wednesday evening (April 12), the B.C. Liberal Party will be no more, at least by name. As promised by leader Kevin Falcon when he took power, the party will officially rebrand tonight at an event in the Lower Mainland.

After a string of public consultation efforts and a vote by all party members at the last convention, the Liberals will become B.C. United.

While the new name will be official tonight, B.C. United MLAs have routinely stated that more work is needed to reinvent a party that has been relegated to official opposition status since 2017. Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Peter Milobar expects Wednesday night’s event to be the start of a big push toward the next provincial election.

“It’s really a chance for us to give people who are looking for that right-of-centre-leaning party a place to go, a place to feel confident that their wishes will be looked after, that their ideals will be looked after as what we do as a party,” said Milobar.

Milobar noted that yes, the name does resemble that of a soccer team, but said the party will be leaning into that.

The Kamloops-North Thompson MLA referenced the recent policy announcement around mental health and addictions, saying more plans will be introduced soon.

“You don’t go through something like a name change and then have the same old, same old when it comes to policy and ways forward,” said Milobar. “And that is what we are really seeing under our leader Kevin Falcon is a new way forward, a new way of looking at the big tent party in terms of how we deal with things on a social agenda but also how we make sure the economics of the province are functioning well — that we are firing the best that we can and nobody is left behind.”
