KAMLOOPS — The ALS Society of British Columbia held its 2022 Golf Tournament of Hope Friday (Sept. 8) out at Rivershore Golf Course. It’s the 14th annual tournament held in Kamloops to help raise awareness and funding for the society.

Over the 14 years of the event, it has raised over $100,000 to support patient services at ALS B.C. It also funds state-of-the-art communication devices for those living with ALS

“ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and what happens is the brain and the motor neurons in our spinal cord stop communicating to the sensory muscles in our body. When that happens, a person slowly becomes paralyzed. Unfortunately, at this time we don’t have an effected treatment. Life expectancy is 2-to-5 years (after diagnosis),” said Wendy Toyer, ALS Society of B.C. Executive Director.

The tournament is not the only time Kamloops residents step up in the fight against ALS, with other events taking part throughout the year like the Move to Cure ALS and the golf-a-thon.

“Thank-you to the community of Kamloops. Out of all the communities in B.C. I travel to, it has been one of the biggest supporters for us. We have the Move to Cure ALS, we run a support group here, we run our golf tournament here. I absolutely love coming to this community because they are the nicest people in the world,” added Toyer.
