Two fatalities after three-vehicle highway collision in Blue River area

BLUE RIVER, B.C. — RCMP say two people have died in an automobile crash in the Blue River area Wednesday afternoon (June 29).

In a release, Cpl. Mike Halskov with BC Highway Patrol says around 2:05 p.m Wednesday, Clearwater RCMP, BC Highway Patrol and emergency services were called to a three-vehicle collision along Highway 5 near Six Mile Bridge in Blue River.

Halskov says when crews arrived on scene, they found that a sedan heading northbound with two people inside had entered the oncoming lane, first colliding with the trailer of a wide-load, then colliding head-on with the pilot truck.

The driver of the sedan, a man in his 70s, and the passenger, a man in his 20s, died as a result of the collision.

A woman in her 40s was driving the pilot truck and was taken to hospital by Air Ambulance with significant injuries.

The cause of the collision is not considered to be criminal in nature and although it is early in the investigative process, police say evidence suggests that the driver of the sedan may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash.

That section of Highway 5 was shut down for more than four hours on Wednesday while crews investigated and cleared the scene. The road has since re-opened.

Anyone with information about this collision who has not yet spoken with police is asked to contact Clearwater RCMP at 250-674-2237 and cite file 2022-1023.
