KAMLOOPS — Monday morning (April 25), Kamloops mayoral candidate Arjun Singh announced what he’s calling his campaign’s bold ideas for action. The items are an early platform from the current councillor that he says will continue to evolve through conversations with locals leading up to the election.

His ideas include creating a 24/7 crisis outreach team, reviewing discretionary expenses at City Hall and working with the TNRD to attract a film studio to the city.

Arjun is in support of the new performing arts centre in Kamloops, but he wants to see the need for public subsidy decreased. According to Singh’s announcement, the current business case included a public subsidy of $700,000 in year one. The councillor pointed to the TCC as example of how things could be done.

“Either build out utilization of the centre, whether it be private spots for folks to have businesses, just more high-profile events that can generate more revenue. I think that canvas is fairly open, but I think we need to find ways to reduce subsidies for these kind of facilities more and more,” said Singh.

He also addressed the need for the community to move towards low carbon transportation, proposing a three-month festival in the city focused on biking, walking, transit and car-sharing. He hopes the festival will spur conversation around making active transportation safer.

“By getting folks onto bikes and walking, people will tell us where we have gaps in the system that we can actually improve. The idea is to get people really thinking about how they individually impact their own emissions, and that’s through their own transportation patterns,” added Singh.

The mayoral candidate also announced the start of his ‘100 conversations initiative’ where he plans to speak with local citizens and stakeholders about his plan for Kamloops.
