Merritt to receive more than $24M in provincial grant funding for flood-recovery efforts

MERRITT — The City of Merritt has been announced as one of ten communities in B.C. that will be receiving $53.6 million in provincial funding to support recovery efforts.

Merritt will receive $24,255,000, which is welcome news after November’s atmospheric river event that left thousands of residents displaced, and homes destroyed.

The money is in addition to the more than $2.1 billion outlined in the latest provincial budget to help people recover from last year’s floods and wildfires.

Merritt mayor Linda Brown is grateful for the funding and says it will go a long way in the city’s rebuild process. The grant money will help the city bring in temporary housing options as permanent homes are rebuilt. It will also take care of flood-recovery costs not covered by other assistance programs.

“These funds will not solve all our problems and the road ahead will still be incredibly hard for so many of our residents, though we have been given a much-needed dose of hope,” she states. “This funding enables us to commence housing projects that will support hundreds of people and to construct infrastructure where we never could have afforded adequate recovery on our own.”

Brown says it means the many Merritt residents who are still displaced will be able to come home soon.

In addition to supporting intermediate temporary housing for displaced residents of Merritt and Princeton, there are other grants being given to other communities.

The 10 grant recipients include:

* Abbotsford: $6,850,000

* Chilliwack: $3,355,000

* Cowichan Valley Regional District: $550,000

* Fraser Valley Regional District: $1,625,000

* Hope: $2,500,000

* Kent: $2,355,000

* Merritt: $24,255,000

* Mission: $50,000

* Princeton: $11,900,000

* Thompson-Nicola Regional District: $150,000
