VICTORIA — A very dry month of April has dropped snowpack around the Kamloops area to well below normal levels.

According to the May 1 snow survey from the B.C. River Forecast Centre, overall snowpack in B.C. is 106 per cent of normal.

However, the areas with the lowest snowpack are around Kamloops. The North Thompson is at 99 per cent of normal, the South Thompson is at 80 per cent and the Lower Thompson, between Kamloops Lake and Lytton, is at 77 per cent.

The Nicola basin is only at 64 per cent of normal.

The Centre says all three of the Thompson regions saw less than 40 per cent of average precipitation in April. A stretch of warm weather in April allowed a large portion of the accumulated snow to melt.

Officials expect the runoff forecast for the Thompson and Nicola regions to be near normal in the coming weeks.
