Feds’ Air Canada deal could mean more flights in and out of Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Tuesday morning (Apr. 13) it was announced the Federal Government had reached a deal with Air Canada worth over $5 billion dollars, meant to provide much-needed financial relief for the airline.

Air Canada announced a temporary shut-down of flights in and out of Fulton Field last March. While the company had already planned to reinstate their flights to and from Kamloops, YKA Managing Director Ed Ratuski says this funding will help ensure the airline is on good financial footing as it gets back to business.

“Air Canada already had planned on reintroducing the flights into Kamloops for Vancouver and Calgary, effective June 1st,” Ratuski explains. “What this does is really solidifies that commitment Air Canada has made to their schedule, so people can look forward to, and start planning their safe summer travel.”

Ratuski says the travel industry still faces a significant recovery from the financial impacts the pandemic has created. However, as vaccinations continue, he expects more travellers to roll through the gates at YKA.

“It’s going to take a while, still, to recover,” Ratuski says. “We’re looking forward to additional services this summer with Air Canada returning to the market. We’ve got Pacific Coastal offering services to Vancouver, Central Mountain Air offering service to Vancouver and Prince George, and WestJet is offering Edmonton service this summer, as well.”
