‘Keep in mind what you leave behind’: Kamloops RCMP reminding residents of auto crime deterrents

KAMLOOPS — April is Auto Crime Enforcement Month, and Kamloops RCMP are asking residents to ‘keep in mind what you leave behind’.

Thefts from motor vehicles in Kamloops dropped 27 per cent in 2020, as compared to 2019, and police want the public to keep practicing safe habits. RCMP say locking your vehicle regularly and parking in well-lit areas are good ways to deter these crimes.

Cst. Crystal Evelyn says it’s never a bad idea to double check that your locked your car, and give it a once-over before walking away.

“Have a look and make sure there’s nothing valuable showing. If you do have something valuable in your vehicle the trunk is the best spot just because it’s out of sight. That being said if something is particularly valuable to you, please don’t leave it in your vehicles. Wallets are a big one. Do not leave your wallets, don’t leave keys, garage door openers, anything like that.”

Evelyn says even leaving small items visible such as a phone charging cable, a water bottle or a face mask can make your vehicle a target. Often the damage caused by a break-in costs more to repair than the value of whatever items were stolen.

“Don’t make your neighbourhood a good fishing hole for crime. We tell people that because the things that you do to protect your vehicle from becoming a target of crime are also the things that keep people from coming back and checking those vehicles over and over again.”
