B.C.’s COVID-19 case count jumps by 617 — but only 17 in Interior Health

VICTORIA — B.C. has recorded an eye-opening increase in COVID-19 cases, but very few of them were found in Interior Health.

In a prepared update, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there were 617 new cases Thursday (Feb. 18), with only 17 in the Interior.

The new cases bring B.C.’s total to 75,327, spread out as follows:

  • 17,371 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 146)
  • 44,562 — Fraser Health (up by 342)
  • 2,045 — Island Health (up by 19)
  • 7,072 — Interior Health (up by 17)
  • 4,227 — Northern Health (up by 92)
  • 155 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

Henry says there are 4,348 active cases of the virus in B.C. Thursday, up by nearly 200 from Wednesday. There are 224 people in hospital and 60 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 692 active cases of COVID-19, down by 31 from Wednesday. Twenty-nine people are in hospital regionally with nine in critical care.

Four more people have died of COVID-19, with the death toll now at 1,321. Two of the deaths occurred in Interior Health, lifting the death toll regionally to 90.

The number of those being monitored due to COVID-19 exposure is 7,440.

A total of 69,602 people are considered fully recovered, or 92 per cent of all recorded cases.

Henry says B.C. has administered 180,691 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, including 29,952 second doses.
