B.C. sees 1,158 new COVID-19 cases over past three days, 194 in Interior Health

VICTORIA — B.C. has come out of the weekend with fewer active cases of COVID-19.

The information was contained in a briefing from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry Monday (Feb. 1).

Henry reported 1,158 new cases of COVID-19 over the past three days — 408 cases on Saturday, 473 on Sunday and 277 on Monday. There were 194 new cases within Interior Health.

The new cases bring B.C.’s total to 67,937 since the pandemic began, spread out thusly through the province:

  • 15,616 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 295)
  • 40,777 — Fraser Health (up by 493)
  • 1,674 — Island Health (up by 78)
  • 6,345 — Interior Health (up by 194)
  • 3,489 — Northern Health (up by 98)
  • 141 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are 4,134 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Monday, down by more than 400 from when cases were last reported to the public on Friday. Henry noted there are 289 patients in hospital with 79 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 965 active cases, down 61 from Friday. There are 50 people in hospital with 18 in critical care.

Henry reported 18 cases of “variants of concern” of COVID-19 — four cases of the so-called South African variant and 14 cases of a variant originating in the United Kingdom.

Twenty-one more people have died of the virus, bringing the death toll in the province to 1,210. Five of the weekend’s deaths took place within Interior Health, swelling the regional death toll to 74.

The total of those under active public health monitoring due to direct exposure to COVID-19 cases is now 7,242.

The number of those considered fully recovered from the virus has reached 61,117, or 90 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry noted 138,892 doses of vaccine have been administered in B.C., including 4,491 second doses.
