Lost Cariboo snowmobiler praised for ‘spot-on’ survival response

100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — A 17-year old snowmobiler in the South Cariboo is being commended by search and rescue crews who found him after he became separated from his group this weekend.

Saturday night, the teen was sledding near Mica Mountain – about an hour-and-a-half east of 100 Mile House.

When his friends couldn’t find him, they called for help.

When search crews arrived, he was found inside a snow-cave he had built to protect himself from the elements.

“He had dug into a bank and created a small cave for himself,” said South Cariboo Search and Rescue Search Manager James Seeley. “What that does is it gets you out of the wind and the snow itself acts as a bit of an insulator once you’re in there. The small area that you’re in does help warm you up and keep you out of the elements.”

Seeley complimented the teen for his preparedness.

“It’s going to mitigate the effects of the really, super cold weather,” said Seeley. “It’s just a technique that many people in winter outdoor activities practice and they’re familiar with – it’s just a way to keep yourself warmer at night if you can’t build a fire.”

Team members say he was located at around 10:00 p.m. Saturday inside his shelter with food and water.
