B.C. surpasses 1,000 COVID-19 deaths; 1,475 cases recorded over three days

VICTORIA — With another deadly weekend, B.C. has now surpassed 1,000 fatalities from COVID-19 since the pandemic began in early 2020.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 22 more deaths from the virus Monday (Jan. 11), bringing the provincial death toll to 1,010. Two of the deaths took place within Interior Health, bringing the regional death toll to 40.

There were 1,475 new cases of COVID-19 found over the past three days — 538 on Saturday, 507 on Sunday and 430 on Monday — for an average of 492 per day.

The total number of cases recorded in B.C. since the pandemic began is now 58,107, spread out as follows:

  • 13,312 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 287)
  • 36,287 — Fraser Health (up by 736)
  • 1,138 — Island Health (up by 59)
  • 4,704 — Interior Health (up by 217)
  • 2,560 — Northern Health (up by 173)
  • 111 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 3)

Henry says there are 5,220 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Monday, down about 900 since the last report on Friday. Of those, 358 patients are hospitalized including 72 in critical or intensive care.

In Interior Health, the active case load is up 50 from Friday to 880. Thirty-six of those people are in hospital, with nine in critical care.

A total of 7,313 people are under active public health monitoring because they have had direct contact with known COVID-19 cases.

The number of those considered fully recovered from the virus has reached 50,541, or 87 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Dr. Henry reported 59,902 vaccinations have been provided since vaccine arrived in B.C. — 48,533 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and 11,369 doses of the Moderna vaccine.

Henry says B.C. has received shipments totalling 71,200 doses of vaccine — 50,700 from Pfizer-BioNTech and 20,500 from Moderna.
