COVID-19 death toll grows by 18 in B.C.; 617 new cases found Friday

VICTORIA — The death toll from COVID-19 in B.C. has risen by 18.

That information comes in a news release from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

There were 617 new cases of the virus found in B.C. Friday (Jan. 8), including 81 within Interior Health.

The new cases raise the provincial total since the pandemic began to 56,632, spread throughout B.C. as follows:

  • 13,025 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 139)
  • 35,551 — Fraser Health (up by 320)
  • 1,079 — Island Health (up by 27)
  • 4,487 — Interior Health (up by 81)
  • 2,387 — Northern Health (up by 49)
  • 108 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 1)

The active COVID-19 case load in B.C. is 6,118 Friday, down by about 200 from Thursday. The cases include 358 patients in hospital including 75 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 830 active cases, with 32 people in hospital including ten in critical care.

The 18 more deaths lift the provincial death toll to 988. Three of the new deaths took place within Interior Health, bringing the regional total to 38.

There are 8,755 people under active public health monitoring due to exposure to known cases of COVID-19.

A total of 48,205 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 85 per cent of all recorded cases.

Health officials have now served 46,259 people with their first doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
