B.C. records 625 new COVID-19 infections; IH head warns of increased spread in the Interior

VICTORIA — B.C. has recorded 625 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday (Jan. 6), according to a news release from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Seventy-one of the new cases were found within Interior Health (IH). In a news release, IH President and CEO Susan Brown warned of the increased spread of the virus within the region.

“We are seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases throughout Interior Health, so please, stay home if you are feeling unwell, get tested, and use your layers of protection,” said Brown.

The new COVID-19 cases bring B.C.’s overall case count to 55,254, spread throughout the province as follows:

  • 12,792 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 178)
  • 34,747 — Fraser Health (up by 305)
  • 1,029 — Island Health (up by 28)
  • 4,310 — Interior Health (up by 71)
  • 2,274 — Northern Health (up by 43)
  • 107 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

The active case load is at 6,343 Wednesday, down by more than 100 from Tuesday. Of the active cases, 381 patients are in hospital including 78 in intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 785 active cases, including 33 people in hospital with nine in intensive care.

There have been eight more deaths in B.C. due to COVID-19, bringing the province’s death toll to 962. With one more COVID-19-related death in Interior Health, at Vernon’s Heritage Square, the region’s death toll is now 34.

The total of people under active public health monitoring due to exposure to known COVID-19 cases has reached 8,719.

There are 46,728 people considered fully recovered from the virus, or 85 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, 33,665 people in B.C. have now received their first doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
