VICTORIA — COVID-19 is still taking a deadly toll in British Columbia, but its spread is on the decrease.

In a media briefing Monday afternoon (Jan. 4), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 2,211 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the past four days — 565 on Friday, 607 on Saturday, 500 on Sunday and 539 on Monday. The average for the four days is 552 per day.

That brings the provincial total since the pandemic arrived here to 54,201, spread through the province as follows:

12,524 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 389)

34,219 — Fraser Health (up by 1,301)

992 — Island Health (up by 64)

4,177 — Interior Health (up by 288)

2,183 — Northern Health (up by 169)

107 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry says there are 6,823 active cases of the virus in B.C. Monday, down by nearly 1,000 since totals were last reported on Thursday. There are 351 people in hospital with the virus, including 76 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 761 active cases, with 37 people in hospital including eight in intensive care.

Forty-five more people have died of COVID-19, bringing the provincial death toll to 946. Four of those 45 deaths took place within Interior Health. Henry says most of the newly-recorded deaths took place among B.C’s elderly population.

At least 8,785 people are under active public monitoring due to exposure to confirmed cases. The Northern Health total is not reported in that figure due to ongoing technical problems.

A total of 45,229 people are considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 83 per cent of all known cases.
