VICTORIA — Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says it is good news that B.C.’s COVID-19 curve is levelling. But Henry notes that plateau is taking place at a very high level.

Henry reported a total of 1,667 new COVID-19 cases in the past three days — 652 on Saturday, 486 on Sunday and 529 on Monday. That averages out to 556 cases per day.

There have been 189 new cases in Interior Health since Friday (Dec. 18).

A total of 47,067 cases have been found in B.C. since the pandemic began, distributed as follows:

  • 11,252 — Vancouver Coastal (up 283)
  • 29,971 — Fraser Health (up by 1,084)
  • 829 — Island Health (up by 21)
  • 3,213 — Interior Health (up by 189)
  • 1,599 — Northern Health (up by 90)
  • 107 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry reported the number of active COVID-19 cases on Monday is now 9,718, with 341 people in hospital including 80 in critical or intensive care.

In Interior Health, there are 721 active cases with 33 people in hospital and seven in intensive care.

Forty-one more people have died of the virus, bringing B.C.’s death toll to 765. Health Minister Adrian Dix reported nine of those deaths took place in Interior Health. The health region only had eight total deaths in the entire pandemic to this point.

The total of people under active public health monitoring due to direct exposure to COVID-19 is now at least 9,651, though Henry noted that does not include the total for Northern Health, which is experiencing an issue with reporting data.

There are 35,455 people considered fully recovered from the virus, or 75 per cent of all known COVID-19 cases.

Henry also reported there were 3,644 people who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine last week, most of them healthcare workers. She noted doses of the vaccine have now arrived in all of B.C.’s five health regions.
