Twenty-four more deaths in B.C. due to COVID-19; 640 new cases

VICTORIA — It has been another deadly day in B.C.’s battle against COVID-19.

According to a news release from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry Wednesday (Dec. 16), 24 more people have died from the virus, bringing B.C.’s overall death toll to 692.

Interior Health says one of the deaths took place within the region — a woman in her 90s not associated with any current outbreak.

Henry says 640 more cases of COVID-19 were recorded today, including 91 within Interior Health.

There have now been 44,103 cases of the virus found in B.C. since the pandemic began, spread through the province as follows:

  • 10,718 — Vancouver Coastal (up 98)
  • 28,078 — Fraser Health (up by 399)
  • 799 — Island Health (up by 5)
  • 2,998 — Interior Health (up by 91)
  • 1,415 — Northern Health (up by 47)
  • 99 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

Henry says there are 9,950 active COVID-19 cases in B.C. Wednesday, with 362 people in hospital including 91 in intensive care.

Earlier in the day, Interior Health reported 843 active cases, with 28 patients hospitalized including seven in intensive care.

The total of people under active public health monitoring due to COVID-19 exposure is now 10,538.

There are 32,376 people considered fully recovered from the virus, or 73 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry says 409 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine were administered to healthcare workers Tuesday.
