KAMLOOPS — New cases of COVID-19 continued to pop up at a higher rate over the weekend in B.C., prompting a new public health order limiting household gatherings.

In her Monday afternoon (Oct. 26) update, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says household gatherings are now limited to the immediate household plus six others.

Henry says the province is seeing transmission within household gatherings, including Thanksgiving celebrations that took place two weeks ago.

The health officer also said “it is expected” that people wear masks in public places, though she stopped short of ordering masks to be worn.

B.C. recorded 817 new cases of COVID-19 over the past three days, including 317 new cases on Saturday, a new daily high for the province. There were 293 new cases on Sunday and 207 on Monday.

That adds up to a total of 13,371 COVID-19 cases in B.C. since the pandemic began, spread through the province as follows:

  • 4,428 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 109)
  • 7,529 — Fraser Health (up by 665)
  • 250 — Vancouver Island (unchanged)
  • 693 — Interior Health (up by 31)
  • 383 — Northern Health (up by 11)
  • 88 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are now 2,325 active cases of the virus in B.C., including 77 people in hospital and 26 in critical or intensive care.

Interior Health says there are 86 active cases in the region, including one person in hospital.

Three more people have died of COVID-19, all of them long-term care residents in the Vancouver Coastal region. The provincial death toll is now 259.

The number of people under active public health monitoring is now 5,077. Those people have had contact with people who have known COVID-19 cases.

A total of 10,734 are now considered fully recovered from the virus, or 80 per cent of all known cases.
