B.C. sees 223 new COVID-19 cases; outbreak at Kelowna school grows

VICTORIA — B.C. has eclipsed 200 COVID-19 for the third consecutive day.

In a news release, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there have been 223 new cases of COVID-19 recorded Friday (Oct. 23), including 18 new cases within Interior Health.

There have now been 12,554 cases of the virus since the pandemic was declared in B.C., spread through the province as follows:

  • 4,319 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 59)
  • 6,864 — Fraser Health (up by 144)
  • 250 — Island Health (up by 1)
  • 662 — Interior Health (up by 18)
  • 371 — Northern Health (up by 6)
  • 88 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

The number of active cases has jumped again, up 89 to 2,009, including 75 people in hospital and 24 in intensive care.

In Interior Health, the active case count is 72, with two people in hospital and one in intensive care.

There were no new deaths from COVID-19 Friday, leaving the provincial death toll at 256.

Public health officials are now actively monitoring 4,637 people because they have been exposed to confirmed COVID-19 cases.

A total of 10,247 people are now considered fully recovered from the virus, constituting 82 per cent of all known cases.

Meantime, Interior Health says a further six people have tested positive for COVID-19 connected to the outbreak at a francophone school in Kelowna.

There are 160 people who have been ordered to self-isolate in relation to the outbreak.
