Assumed-to-be-dead bald eagle resurrects in back seat of Cariboo driver’s car

100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — A Cariboo good Samaritan may just have helped save the life of an eagle on Wednesday (Oct.21).

A driver was heading north on Highway 97 near 100 Mile House when he came across what he believed was a dead bald eagle along the highway. The driver says he believed the eagle had been struck by a vehicle, so he placed it in the back of his vehicle with the intent to drop it off at the local Conservation office.

However, plans quickly changed as the assumed to be dead eagle awoke from what RCMP say was likely a concussion-induced sleep, scaring the good Samaritan as he drove along the highway.

The man drove straight to the local RCMP detachment where he was met by an officer who was about to start his shift. The officer took some photos of the bird and then contacted Conservation.

A local Conservation Officer (CO) attended the detachment and retrieved the eagle, placing it safely into a kennel. An update from the CO on Thursday morning said that the eagle was doing well with plans already in the works to get it in to see a veterinarian and then down to the Lower Mainland for rehabilitation.

Although this story may have had a happy ending, 100 Mile House RCMP are stressing caution when approaching any wild animal that may look deceased. The public is asked to to contact the CO hotline at 1-877-855-3222 or the local RCMP detachment if they find a dead animal.
