B.C. averages 166 new COVID-19 cases per day over the weekend; 21 total in Interior Health

VICTORIA — The Province of B.C. is reporting 499 new cases of COVID-19 over the past three days, an average of 166 per day. Twenty-one of the new cases were found in the Interior Health region.

In a news conference, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says 172 cases were found Saturday (Oct. 17), 153 on Sunday and 174 on Monday. Seven of the new cases were epidemiologically linked to known COVID-19 cases.

There have now been 11,687 total cases recorded in B.C. since the pandemic began, spread through B.C. as follows:

  • 4,146 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 110)
  • 6244 — Fraser Health (up by 360)
  • 243 — Island Health (up by 3)
  • 611 — Interior Health (up by 21)
  • 355 — Northern Health (up by 5)
  • 88 — Reside outside of Canada (down by 1 — data correction)

Henry reported 1,639 active cases of COVID-19, including 67 patients in hospital, 19 of whom are in critical or intensive care.

In Interior Health, there are 36 active cases including two people in hospital and one in intensive care.

The B.C. death toll grew by two over the weekend to 253. One person lived in Fraser Health and the other in Vancouver Coastal Health.

There are now 4,028 people who are under active public health monitoring due to exposures to known COVID-19 cases.

A total of 9,753 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 83 per cent of all known cases.

There were four more healthcare centre outbreaks recorded on the weekend, all in the Lower Mainland, while two ongoing outbreaks were declared over.

Another community outbreak was found at J & L Beef Limited in Surrey.
