WolfPack’s Moskalyk double winner at CCBC awards

KAMLOOPS — Tyler Moskalyk of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack was a double winner as the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference dished out its major awards for 2018-19. Moskalyk, a graduating right hander from Thunder Bay, Ontario was named the CCBC’s pitcher with the most strike outs and most victories.

The awards were handed out at a BBQ at Norbrock Stadium on Wednesday (May 8). That is the site of the 2019 CCBC championship Tournament.

Moskalyk had a record of 7-1 and had 80 strikeouts. He had an earned run average of 1.68.

He was one of two double winners of major awards. The other was Kamloops, BC native Riley Jepson of the University of Fraser Valley Cascades. Jepson had the league’s top batting average of .405. He and Vancouver Island University’s Phil Whelen (Calgary, AB) had the most homers with six.

Two members of the defending league champion Okanagan College Coyotes were major award recipients as well. Trevor Brigden (Ontario) was named the top pitcher. He had a record of 6-0, 64 strikeouts, started five of the seven games he appeared in, pitched 36 innings and had an earned run average of 2.00.

Catcher Jake Fischer (Edmonton, AB) had the most RBI’s with 32.

Okanagan College had the league best batting average (283) and earned run average (3.21).

All of the major award winners were also named CCBC all-stars. All were first team selections aside from Whelan.

For the WolfPack, Moskalyk was joined on the first all-star team by centerfielder Adam FIlmon (Winnipeg, MB) and infielder Liam Rihela (South Surrey, BC). Filmon appeared in 27 games, had 105 at bats, scored22 runs, had 37 hits, six doubles, two triples and 17 runs batted in. He walked 15 times, had six stolen bases and an average of .352. Rihela played in 28 games, had 109 at bats, scored 31 runs, had 38 hits, 14 doubles, two triples, three homers and 20 runs batted in. He stole five bases and had an average of .349.

Two Thompson Rivers pitchers: Tyler Hodder (Fort McMurray, AB) and Joe Siniscalchi (Burnaby, BC) were named to the CCBC second all-star team. This was Hodder’s fourth straight all-star selection. He was 5-1 this year with eight complete games. He pitched 54.2 innings, striking out 46, walking 19 and surrendering 43 hits. Hodder’s earned run average was 2.90.

Siniscalchi was ‘the’ story for Thompson Rivers this year. His off season fitness regime paid off as he won the third starters position with the ‘Pack. He was 4-0 and had six complete games. He struck out 22, walked 15, gave up 45 hits and had an earned run average of 2.65.

Here is the complete list of the CCBC all-stars. The University of Fraser Valley and Okanagan College had the most players selected with seven followed by the WolfPack with five, Edmonton Collegiate with three. Calgary, Prairie Baseball Academy and Vancouver Island University each had two selections.

The Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference championship tournament opens Thursday (May 9) at Norbrock. The first game has PBA meeting Edmonton Collegiate at 10 am. The winner of that game will meet the WolfPack in the feature game at 7 pm.

There are two games at 1 pm: Okanagan College faces Vancouver Island University and the University of Calgary does battle with the University of the Fraser Valley. The winners of those games will meet Thursday at 4 pm.

Play continues Friday (May 10) and Saturday (May 11). For the first time, the CCBC championship final will be a best of three affair. Game one is Saturday at 7 pm. Game two and possibly three will be played on Sunday (May 12) at 11 am and 2 pm respectively.
