KAMLOOPS — Some brief excitement in Aberdeen this afternoon as a bear was spotted near Pacific Way Elementary School.

RCMP officers were patrolling the neighbourhood early this afternoon.

The bear was seen wandering through backyards off of Aberdeen Drive before police chased it up towards Pacific Way.

Officers had their shotguns drawn, but the bear quickly disappeared back into the surrounding hills.

Staff at Pacific Way Elementary were informed of the unfolding incident.

"They told me there's a bear in the area, and they were tracking it down, and to make sure the kids weren't outside," said Principal Anthoney Rempel.

"It's probably once or twice a year we hear about (bears in the area). It's usually in the spring when they come out of hibernation, and in the fall when they're hungry."
