KAMLOOPS — Last year, the province of B.C., through B.C. Housing purchased the apartment building at 435 Cherry Avenue in Kamloops.

The building was damaged in a 2021 fire and required extensive renovations to bring the building back up to code. The renos were estimated to cost approximately $500,000 and be completed last summer. However, delays and problems with the previous owner have pushed that opening date back to this summer.

“We are still working on that timeline,” confirmed BC Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon to CFJC Today. “Unfortunately, with any development, whether it’s a shelter or new housing, there are delays that come with it, but we do feel an urgency to get it open, because it’s desperately needed in the community and the timelines are still proceeding on those that we have made public.”

The building’s 42 units range from studios to two-bedrooms. Once renovated, they will be offered to low- and moderate-income families, seniors, individuals and people living with disabilities.

“We are working closely with mayor and council with our partners to make sure that we can have a comprehensive solution for Kamloops,” said Kahlon. “I really appreciate the partners coming together.”
