KAMLOOPS — After a disappointing first week of competition, the TRU Wolfpack Men’s Soccer team got on the board with their first victory of the year in their home opener against the University of Victoria Vikes.

Mitchell Popadynetz opened the scoring for the Wolfpack in just the second minute of the match, firing home a rebound past UVic keeper Jasdeep Lally for his third of the U SPORTS season.

Just two and half minutes after the Popadynetz goal, TRU defensive back Thomas Lantmeeters scored his first ever goal for the Wolfpack, heading in a corner kick to make it 2-0 for Thompson Rivers.

The Wolfpack piled on the pressure against the team from Vancouver Island throughout the first half, firing 9 shots at the Victoria net.

The Vikes managed to stave off the TRU attack until the 80th minute when Justin Donaldson put the pack up 3-0. Donaldson took a pass from Adam Chambers, then barged into the middle and unloaded with his right foot from the top of the 18-yard box.

TRU keeper Lubo Magdolen made just one save for the clean sheet against the Vikes.

The ‘Pack take on the UBC Thunderbirds Sunday at 2:00 pm at Hillside Stadium. UBC is ranked 5th in the nation, after one week of U SPORTS competition.
