Warning to smokers from Kamloops Fire and Rescue

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire and Rescue has issued a plea to smokers to take extra caution with cigarettes and smoking materials after a discarded cigarette butt was found near the point of origin of a grass fire on Rose Hill Road earlier this week.

Assistant Fire Chief Steve Robinson says the tinder dry conditions of the grasslands means that a grassfire started for any reason could have disastrous consequences.

The minimum fine for improperly discarding a cigarette is $500, and it could be a lot higher depending on circumstances.

In 2003, a discarded cigarette is believed responsible for the Strawberry Hill fire, which forced the evacuation of the entire community of Rayleigh.

Robinson adds that people need to remember that many parks in the area are closed due to wildfire danger, including Kenna Cartwright Park, and they won’t reopen until the fire danger decreases significantly.

Although we had some rain, and even hail yesterday, the precipitation wasn’t enough to provide any significant reduction to the fire danger.
