Horgan unveils plan to revitalize B.C. forest industry

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. NDP leader made a stop in Kamloops on Monday, revealing his plan to revive the B.C. forest industry, particularly in the Southern Interior. 

With Domtar as his backdrop, John Horgan told the crowd his plan to utilize more wood products during construction projects to create more demand in the industry. 

“When we’re building schools and hospitals and housing, we want to make sure we’re using wood products to the greatest extent possible,” said Horgan. “That means building into our Request for Proposals opportunities for people to invest in creating new value-added wood products, so we can build British Columbia again with B.C. products.”

Horgan believes it would lead to fewer raw logs being exported out of country. There are 30,000 fewer people employed in the forest sector since 2001, and he wants to create a brighter future for the industry.

“How we do that is we ensure there are more jobs created from each log,” noted Horgan. “Since 2001, there’s been a 500% increase in the export of raw logs. Those are jobs leaving British Columbia, jobs that we desperately need here in rural B.C. and on the Coast.”
