Canadian star Milos Raonic qualifies for season-ending ATP Finals tournament

LONDON — Milos Raonic has qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals for the second time in his career.

Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., became the fourth player this season to qualify for the year-ending tennis tournament, which will be held at London’s O2 Arena, following Saturday’s results in Beijing and Tokyo and the release of the Shanghai Rolex Masters draw.

The 25-year-old Canadian most recently advanced to the semifinals of the China Open in Beijing, but withdrew due to an injury he suffered in his quarter-final victory against Pablo Carreno Busta.

Raonic also qualified for the final tournament in 2014, becoming the first Canadian and the first player born in the 1990s to do so.

“I have had my best ever season so far this year and it is a great reward to be one of the first few players to qualify for London,” Raonic said in a statement. “I love playing indoors and I look forward to finishing 2016 hopefully on a high note.”

While injuries have bothered him lately, Raonic has had a successful 2016 season that included his first ever Grand Slam final appearance at Wimbledon and a win over Roger Federer in the final of the Brisbane Open.

Raonic is currently sixth on the ATP world rankings.
