School District 73 facing big budget shortfall
KAMLOOPS — School District 73 is looking at yet another multi-million dollar budget shortfall.
The district presented its budget to the public in an information session yesterday, and Superintendent Karl deBruijn says the combination of declining enrollment and a government-mandated decrease in administration costs has hit hard.
“Together those two result in a $3.7 million less revenue to work with this year. We are fortunate however to have $1.25 million savings in pension contributions, so we were able to apply that it, bring in the overall problem to $2.45 million,” said DeBruijn.
DeBruijn says the district will need to decrease its staffing by about 20 in order to balance the books, including about 15 teaching positions.
