“I want to be able to do what is authentic and honest and natural. It’s the only way that I’ve been able to survive.”

“My dream has always been to…put out music in the way that a rapper does,” Ariana tells Billboard. “I feel like there are certain standards that pop women are held to that men aren’t,” she notes. “It’s just like, ‘Bruh, I just want to…talk to my fans and sing and write music and drop it the way these boys do. Why do they get to make records like that and I don’t?’ So I do and I did and I am, and I will continue to.”

The cover story also reveals that Ari’s new album, also called Thank U, Next, was “mostly written in a week” and “recorded in two weeks.” She says the album was “the product of a lot of feminine energy and champagne and music and laughter and crying.”

This [album’s] not particularly uplifting,” Ariana says. “A lot of it sounds really upbeat, but it’s actually a super sad chapter.” She adds: “I just want to be happy and healthy – one day – and make music.”

On getting involved in public romances, Ari said: “This is how I meet people – I can’t just, like, meet someone at a bar. I live fast and full-out, and I make mistakes, and I learn from them and I’m grateful no matter what happens.”

Ariana also took a trip down memory lane will Billboard, looking at some childhood photos. The first photo Ariana pulls out shows what can only be described as the “bend and snap” which pays homage to the iconic scene from Legally Blonde.

Next, she grabs an old flick of herself alongside brother, Frankie. “I still look like that without makeup, and hair, and extensions and stuff… For real, when I get out of the shower, that’s exactly what I look like. I swear to God. I swear,” she said.
