John Legend attended the Google premiere of his new music video for “A Good Night,” filmed entirely on Google Pixel 2, on Thursday in Los Angeles.

“You know, when I started writing again after I got off tour late last year, this was the first song that I wrote,” Legend said. “It was on my mind to write something joyous and celebratory, and when I started playing it for people, it gave them joy. So it definitely felt like something people needed right now.” “The whole idea behind the song is that when you least expect it, you could find someone that could change your life, you know? So it was kind of looking at the idea of dating and how people date today,” John added about the music video. “A lot of that obviously is with apps, but hey, it still can happen in person. So we merged the two ideas into this fun, fictional club.”

The video was shot using 23 Google Pixel 2 smartphones over the course of 14 hours and showcases many of the phone’s impressive features, including video stabilization and its low-light capabilities.

The video also features cameos from several celebrities, including grown-ish’s Yara Shahidi, Insecure’s Jay Ellis and This Is Us star Susan Kelechi Watson.

John says on Google’s official blog that he decided to shoot his video for “A Good Night” on Google’s Pixel 2 because ‘the camera is amazing and we were fascinated by the idea of using a smartphone to film a big budget music video.”

As for the message behind the video and the track, which features electropop musician BloodPop, John explains that it’s about “a magical night where you meet someone you immediately connect with and can envision a future together.”
