KAMLOOPS — On Saturday, dozens of women, children and men gathered at Heritage House in Riverside Park for the 11th annual Shoe Memorial to End Violence Against Women.

The event is held on or around Dec. 6 each year to remember the 14 young women who were killed at a Montreal post-secondary institution, L’ecole Polytechnique, by a man who claimed feminists ruined his life, and features hundreds of shoes laid out in a pattern, each bearing the name of a woman who died as a result of violence.

“Each of these shoes has a tag [with the name] of a woman who was murdered over the years,” Kamloops District and Labour Council first Vice President Lois Rugg explained. “It’s just an idea that we walk in their shoes and remember what they had to go through.”

The event was originally organized by Lyn Chasse, as a way to honour her own mother who was murdered by a man she knew well. This year, the KDLC took over hosting the event. Rugg says they wanted to ensure the event continues because violence against women is a significant problem that persists in our society.
