Indigenous cultural centre in the works for Quesnel

QUESNEL — The City of Quesnel has partnered with the Lhtako Dene Nation with the hopes of building an Indigenous Cultural Centre.

It would be located at Ceal Tingley Park at the confluence of the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers.

In a news release, the city says the location is significant to Lhtako Dene as it was the location of a large settlement and it is also the site of first European contact.

The Centre would provide a home for Lhtako Dene artifacts (currently stored at UBC) and will serve as a community gathering place.

The proposed concept includes a potential theatre space, gift shop, bistro, accessible washrooms and space to display local art.

The city has approved the necessary funds to order a quantity survey for the proposed Centre. Once the survey is complete, the City of Quesnel and Lhtako Dene Nation will prepare a grant application for funding.

The city says the concept for the Centre emerged prior to the 2017 signing of their Memorandum of Understanding.
