Snow hits parts of the Southern Interior on Halloween

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — Winter is paying an early visit to mountainsides and highways around Kamloops, but rain in the city is expected to hold off for trick-or-treaters tonight.

Sun Peaks Resort was hit with 22 centimetres of new snow over the past 24 hours, blanketing the village and mountains with powder.

Areas of the Coquihalla Highway heading into Kamloops, especially near the Walloper exit south of the city, have plenty of snow on the sides of the highway, but roads appear to be fairly clear.

Environment Canada meteorologist Matt MacDonald says snow in the valley isn’t expected for at least another week, and precipitation should clear for trick-or-treaters this evening.

“We’re expecting all that rain to taper off early this afternoon, and the trick or treat window is looking nice and dry,” MacDonald says. “As we head into tomorrow we’re looking at more rain developing in the afternoon and the outlook looks pretty wet with kind of back-to-back systems lined up one after the other. A nice little break this evening luckily, but those will be few and far between I think going forward.”

MacDonald adds that there’s a cooling trend heading into the second part of next week, but things will start off fairly mild in Kamloops for November.

“Temperature-wise, we’re sitting just a little bit above seasonal, so highs of nine and 10 degrees during the day and overnight lows well above the freezing mark — kind of two to four degree mark — so a pretty mild start to November in the next week here.”
