KAMLOOPS — For more than a decade, B100 has been partnering with the Kamloops Food Bank for Basics for Babies. The annual fundraiser helps the Food Bank ensure the most vulnerable members of our community get what they need to have a good start in life. The 2018 edition of the event took place Friday morning at Hotel 540, and according to Food Bank staff, this year might have been one of the best ever.

2018 marked the 11th year the event has helped raise funds and bring in essentials for babies and infants in need in Kamloops.

“This [event] is serving the community’s most vulnerable: babies who can’t do anything about their circumstances or support themselves,” Kamloops Food Bank Executive Director Bernadette Siracky told CFJC Today. “It pulls at everybody’s heartstrings… they come and support this event without question, which assures we can provide the essentials year round.”

For community members who have attended the event before, knowing they’re making a difference for someone who really needs it is what keeps them coming back, year after year. For those who haven’t experienced Basics for Babies before, like new RCMP Supt. Syd Lecky, Basics for Babies shows how generous our community can be.

“It’s a measure and a sign of what you’re all about. You help those who might need a hand,” Lecky said. “I think it just shows the compassion for the community we have here.”

B100 is the title sponsor of the event, and for Morning Show host Cheryl Blackwell, providing those essentials is the best possible way to give back to those who need them.

“We’re talking about that formula that allows their brains to develop, and all the basics that go along with it,” Blackwell said. “It really feels like we’re making a difference in our community. we’re changing the future of Kamloops.”

After 11 years, Siracky is always amazed at the generosity the community continues to show.

“The cheque presentations… I’m going to guess we hit a record,” Siracky said. “The amount of diapers and formula and other product people have brought in the door is absolutely breathtaking.”

For those babies and their families who rely on the Food Bank, you can’t put a price on that generosity.
