KAMLOOPS — The election for mayor of Kamloops next month will be a two-horse race.
Potential candidates had until 4:00 p.m. Friday to file their nomination paperwork.
Incumbent Ken Christian will be challenged by political newcomer William Turnbull.
There are 21 candidates for eight seats on Kamloops council, including six incumbents.
Notable challengers include school trustee Gerald Watson, recently-retired Kamloops This Week associate editor Dale Bass and Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association President Mike O’Reilly.
Incumbent councillor Donovan Cavers has decided to run for both council and trustee for School District 73.
There are 10 candidates for four urban trustee spots around the Kamloops-Thompson School District Board of Education.
They include three incumbents, as well as Cavers, former Kamloops councillor John O’Fee and former provincial communist candidate Beat Klossner, among others.
In the rural districts, incumbents will be acclaimed in Area Two, Three and Five, and Area Four will see an election between Diane Jules and Caroline Thompson.
In the rural areas of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, directors Mel Rothenburger and Herb Graham will be acclaimed, but there will be elections in the other eight areas.
In areas outside of Kamloops, four mayor’s will be acclaimed, including Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine, Logan Lake Mayor Robin J Smith, Lytton Mayor Jan Polderman and Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson.
