KAMLOOPS — A Tobiano resident is renewing calls for a new left turn lane on the Trans Canada Highway at Cherry Creek after witnessing a close call yesterday.

Greg Gordon was driving westbound, approaching Rodeo Drive when he saw the dangerous situation setting up.

A vehicle was stopped in the left lane of the highway, preparing to turn left onto Rodeo.

Behind that vehicle, another car was making a pass and approaching rapidly.

Gordon says it’s not a new scenario for anyone who travels that stretch of highway regularly.

“I could see it getting set up there. I think you can hear me on the video saying ‘pay attention’ to the person,” said Gordon. “Obviously, that didn’t work.”

Gordon’s dashcam shows the approaching car darting out of the way when the driver realized they were approaching a stopped vehicle, averting disaster.

This intersection has seen violent crashes before, and Gordon says the risk could be decreased with the addition of a left turn lane.

“It appears that there’s lots of room to the fence line on the north side with which they could widen the highway to add one lane,” said Gordon. “If they had a left turn lane there, I think it would alleviate a lot of the problems.”

“I know a gentleman from Cherry Creek wrote to the transportation minister last year about this issue. I sent an email to the transportation minister asking if there were any updates on this. Hopefully, they can make some progress.”

“It should be a fairly low cost fix there because they have the land right beside it. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t move on this,” said Gordon.

In June, two men escaped serious injury after a crash in the same location under a similar scenario.
