Air quality breaks down as more smoke drifts into Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Air quality in Kamloops, already poor from the scores of wildfires burning around the province and into Washington, degraded further Friday afternoon.

Shortly after the noon hour, particulate matter readings as measured by the Purple Air monitor network spiked.

The smoke concentration was worse in higher elevations, with measurements topping 400 micrograms-per-cubic-metre in Aberdeen and Upper Sahali.

Fire Information Officer Marla Catherall of the Kamloops Fire Centre says it does not appear any new, nearby fires are causing the spike, but she encourages the public to get more information at firesmoke.ca.
