KAMLOOPS — RCMP are warning the public about a pair of Kamloops grifters who are scamming people into buying worthless jewellery.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the scam involves two men approaching people and offering to sell them a ring for $60, describing it as 18-karat gold.

Once the buyer takes the ring to be appraised, they are told it is completely worthless.

“It’s fraudulent to do this. As well, it appears that it’s happened more than one time at least,” said Shelkie.

“To the RCMP, it’s only been reported a few times. Anecdotally, other people have said that this has been happening, and it’s always the same ring.”

The suspects are described to be of South Asian descent.

Investigators are asking members the public to report the two suspects if they are seen trying to pull off the same scam.

As for potential buyers, Shelkie says purchasing jewellery from individuals on the street is never a good idea.

“There are all kinds of things that could be wrong with the jewellery if you buy it uncertified or not from a jeweler or a retail store.”
