Gateway considering court injunction to keep picketers away from vehicles

KAMLOOPS — Gateway Casinos wants picketers outside its Kamloops location to keep out of the way of vehicles entering its parking lot.

Director of Public Relations Tanya Gabara says the company is considering seeking a court injunction to ensure it stops.

“This would be obviously if that behaviour continues. We have not sought it and are not looking to do so unless of course there continues to be unsafe actions on the picket line,” she said. “We respect their right to picket but would expect them to get out of the way of vehicles coming in. It’s not safe.”

The Kamloops RCMP has confirmed there have been two separate incidents involving cars and picketers but told CFJC Today earlier this week that they were unable to determine which side was at fault.

Earlier this week the union representing the workers – the BCGEU – alleged two of its members were deliberately hit by vehicles in those two incidents.

In fact, President Stephanie Smith said one of the picketers was sent to hospital by ambulance as a result.

This is just the latest in a strike that started two weeks ago with wages being the biggest sticking point.

Three days of mediation wrapped up this week. No word yet on when both parties plan to return to the bargaining table.

Roughly 700 workers remain behind picket lines throughout the Interior including roughly 200 in Kamloops.
