KAMLOOPS — First Nations will gather in Kamloops this week to give their input into pending language legislation.

A pre-engagement session will be held Thursday while on Friday, the federal Ministry of Indigenous Affairs will be hosting an official engagement session.

Legislation must reflect the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Skeetchestn Chief Ron Ignace says the legislation must “ensure predictable and sufficient funding with language groups having the right to govern their own languages.”

The sessions will take place at the Holiday Inn & Suites Kamloops at 675 Tranquille Road from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The meetings follow a commitment made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in December 2016, when he said the federal government would be developing legislation to support the revitalization of Indigenous languages in Canada.

In his announcement, he stated, “our government will enact an Indigenous Languages Act, co-developed with Indigenous Peoples, with the goal of ensuring the preservation, protection, and revitalization of First Nations, Metis and Inuit languages in this country.”
