Man in mental distress leads to lengthy North Shore standoff

KAMLOOPS — UPDATE – June 25: On Monday, RCMP confirmed the individual in question was in one unit of a fourplex.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says two other units were vacant, and the fourth was evacuated at about 7:30 p.m.

UPDATE: A man in mental dIstress created a standoff on Schubert Drive Sunday morning, he finally left the residence at about 9:00 PM last night. The man, who had threatened violence, was taken to hospital for observation.

EARLIER -RCMP say a man in mental distress has threatened violence against officers, and that has led to a lengthy standoff on the Kamloops North Shore.

The man is barricaded in a home in the 1200-block of Schubert Drive.

A release from the Kamloops detachment says officers were called to the home at about 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

The release says the subject of the complaint refused to come out of the home, and threatened violence if officers entered his residence.

Mounties have set up a wide perimeter, but say no neighbouring residences have been evacuated.

Members of the RCMP Emergency Response Team have are on scene, and a negotiator has made contact with the man.

While the man has made threats of violence, responding officers have yet to determine if he actually has any weapons.

It’s not known when the standoff will end, but RCMP say, for the safety of nearby residents, they will maintain a wide perimeter until the man comes out.
