KAMLOOPS — The Kelson Group unveiled its plans on Friday for a new 77-unit, five-storey rental development that will be built in the heart of the campus at Thompson Rivers University.

The property management group broke the ground on Friday afternoon to signal the beginning of its new project Legacy Square that’s part of The Reach project next to the TRU International building. The Kelson Group won the bid to build on the property, saying it was a no-brainer to pursue this project.

“Location is number one and being so close to the centre of the campus, and then the views up the valley into the city, and just with the growth and development of TRU that were seeing is just fabulous,” says President of Kelson Group Jason Fawcett. “We’re very confident we’re going to have great demand from the students and faculty that would like to live in a rental building that they can call their own.”

TRU President Alan Shaver says the housing development on campus is in line with what’s been happening around the world.

“This is a trend in universities across North America, and in fact in other parts of the world,” says Shaver. “And it tends to break down the walls between universities in the communities. We’re looking forward to people who are not directly associated with the university to be living with us and being part of a university community.”

The multi-family units will be ready as soon as the end of 2019. They will be built right next door to the condo units for sale, a mix of rental and market housing The Reach envisioned during the planning phases.

“The Reach is premised on a balance of both market propertiesm, where people own condominiums, and rental buildings, where people can come live,” notes President & CEO of The Reach Finlay Sinclair. “But certainly we need a continuum of opportunities both in incoming condos but also inter-generational. We want youth living with elderly.”
