United Way raises over $50,000 at Drive-Thru Breakfast and ‘Jail & Bail’

KAMLOOPS — Friday morning, the Thompson Nicola Cariboo branch of the United Way put the “fun” in fundraising, as they took over the Cascades Casino parking lot for their second annual Drive-Thru Breakfast and Jail & Bail Fundraiser. The event is meant to raise much-needed money to ensure kids in our region don’t go hungry, while the United Way has some fun with local business people and other members of the community.

For those looking for a quick breakfast for a good cause, the United Way’s second annual Food for Kids Drive-Thru Breakfast was the way to go.

“We’re fundraising… to make sure kids don’t go hungry in our community,” United Way TNC’s Executive Director Danalee Baker explained.

For many, it’s a quick in-and-out to grab breakfast but for others, like Broadcast Centre’s very own Katie Neustaeter, their stay at the event lasts a little longer.

Neustaeter was charged with a variety of offences relating to her work hosting a multitude of events around the city for numerous organizations.

“I admire how clever they were,” Neustaeter said about the charges levelled against her, but doing hard time isn’t easy for anyone. “I’m hoping I don’t get held for too long.”

Doling out justice, as he has for the past seven years, was the Honourable Judge Tony Ryan, whose job it is to ensure these hardened criminals pay their debt to society before being set free.

“It’s a lot of fun. There are a lot of people who take the time and come out and be part of this and raise money for a really worthy cause,” Judge Ryan said.

If a person’s bail is related to the severity of their crimes, then Katie Neustaeter must have done something truly awful to have to raise over $5500 to secure her release.

In the end, “Krooked” Katie blew past her court-mandated total, estimating she raised somewhere in the neighbourhood of $8000 (with the final tally to come early next week).

And with all the proceeds going towards ensuring kids don’t go hungry throughout our region, the event is hugely important for the United Way.

“The Jail & Bail is a really fun way to support [the Food for Kids initiative],” Baker said. “It’s a fun way to give back and really connect to generosity.”
