TNRD’s recycling changes to take effect soon

KAMLOOPS — It won’t be long before recycling changes in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) take effect.

Residents will soon be asked to separate their recycling into six separate categories when they visit an Eco-Depot or transfer station.

The six recycling categories are:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Containers (plastic, metal, and paper)
  • Plastic bags and overwrap
  • White foam packaging
  • Coloured foam packaging
  • Glass bottles and jars

The changes follow the TNRD’s decision to enter into an agreement with Recycle BC, which is responsible for the recycling of residential packaging and printed paper throughout B.C.

“The Recycle B.C. program shifts the costs associated with recycling these products away from taxpayers and places it back onto producers,” reads a TNRD news release. “All TNRD solid waste disposal facilities will be transitioned over the summer months, with all facilities being compliant with Recycle B.C. standards by early September.”

The TNRD says joining Recycle B.C. will bring many benefits including providing “stable and secure end markets” and savings of approximately $500,000 a year. Those savings will be found in the hauling and processing costs of recycling.
